This is something you may have been thinking about, but too embarrassed to ask…
And here it is. Dry vagina.
If your oestrogen is waving “good bye” to you, it may unfortunately lead to dry skin and vaginal dryness 😬.
And none of us want a dry vagina!
It can be unpleasant, itchy, make sex super uncomfortable, and can even lead to urinary tract infections (UTIs). Yes, frequent UTIs can also be a sign of menopause…
So, what can be done about it?
Let’s start with the basics.
Washing.
Any soap, and I mean any – even “Dove sensitive skin” – will dry out that delicate area further and you don’t want that. So, for “down below” it’s best to stick to warm water.
No soaps. No bath bombs. No douching. No wet wipes.
Just water.
Underwear.
Aim for cotton or natural fabrics as those will allow that area to breathe. I know, cotton might not be the sexiest, but it will help you with dryness and irritation, unlike the synthetics.
Local oestrogen treatment.
This can be prescribed by your doctor. Prescription oestrogen creams, rings, or tablets (e.g., Vagifem) can directly replenish oestrogen in the vaginal area, improving tissue elasticity and moisture. This is not a systemic HRT, so it is safe to use even with a history of breast cancer.
Moisturisers.
Can be bought over-the-counter (Yes, Replense) and used regularly, to help maintain hydration in the vaginal tissues. These are not used during intercourse but rather as part of daily care. A bit like “hand cream” for your bits, really.
Lubricants.
Can be used during sex to reduce friction and enhance comfort.
Avoid products with irritating ingredients like fragrances or glycerin.
I’m usually reluctant to recommend any specific products and I have no financial ties to any of those.
But recently, I’ve come across Gloriah and I met its Scottish founders Isla and Jessica, who were inspired by their friend’s experience of early surgical menopause. They made it their mission to create these beautiful products for women. You might want to give it a go.
But even oils like organic coconut, hempseed and olive oil can act as natural lubricants.
Last but not least, don’t forget to drink water, i.e. hydrate and make sure to include foods rich in phytoestrogens, like soya products, flaxseeds, and nuts, which may have mild oestrogen-like effects.
